Set application preferences
Preferences apply to S3Client regardless of the account in use. Connection settings and S3 capabilities belong to each account’s configuration.
Choose a theme and date display
In View > Theme, select System, Light, or Dark. System is the default and follows the operating system’s theme, including changes during the session. Your choice takes effect immediately and is saved.
To change other preferences:
- Open Tools > Options….
- Select the General tab.
- Enable Show dates in local time to display dates in your computer’s time zone. Leave it unchecked to use UTC, which is the default.
- Click OK.
This setting changes how dates are displayed. It does not change stored timestamps or the comparisons used by operations.
Configure local file traversal
In Tools > Options… > General, Ignore hidden files and Ignore system files are enabled by default. These files are excluded from local listings and folder copy and move traversal. The settings do not filter S3 objects. Refresh the local pane after a change to reload its contents.
Local folder traversal > Symbolic links and junctions: controls symbolic links and Windows junctions:
| Value | Effect |
|---|---|
| Ignore | Skips links encountered during traversal. |
| Follow within selected folder (recommended) | During recursive traversal, follows links whose targets remain within the selected root folder. This is the default. |
| Follow without root restriction | Also follows links outside the selected root. An operation can therefore include data stored elsewhere on disk. |
A transfer copies the contents of the link target; it does not recreate the link on S3. Broken links and links that would create a cycle are skipped. The same folder can be traversed more than once if it is accessible through several links without a cycle. Choose this setting before preparing the copy: it determines which items are included. Synchronization uses different rules: it includes hidden and system files and ignores links. See synchronization.
Updates
Enable automatic check for updates is enabled by default and controls automatic update checks. The manual command is ? > Check for updates.
Multipart transfers
The two Multipart transfers fields set the threshold and preferred part size for uploads and S3 copies. See transfer performance settings for their values and limits, and for the Operations tab settings.
Configure previews
Open Tools > Options… > Preview. These settings apply to previews and do not modify file contents. One KiB is 1,024 bytes; one MiB is 1,048,576 bytes.
| Group and setting | Values and effect |
|---|---|
| Images > Do not preview images of at least: | 1 to 1,024 MiB; default 10 MiB. Image content at or above this size is refused. For an S3 object with Content-Encoding: gzip, the limit applies after decompression and before image decoding. Reading may already have started when the preview is refused. |
| PDF > Limit PDF downloads to: | Enabled by default at 256 MiB. Range: 1 to 2,147,483,647 MiB. The value is editable only while the checkbox is checked; clear it to allow PDF downloads without this limit. |
| Preview downloads > Maximum concurrent requests per preview: | 1 to 32; default 4. Maximum simultaneous requests for each S3 image, PDF, or media preview. A value of 1 disables parallel downloading. |
| Preview downloads > Parallel download threshold: | 64 to 1,048,576 KiB; default 256 KiB. Minimum size at which an S3 preview can use concurrent byte ranges. |
| Text > Maximum text preview content: | 1 to 64 KiB; default 64 KiB. Limits data read or downloaded and decompressed content. Larger text files produce a partial preview. |
| Text > Text preview font: | Installed font used for text previews; defaults to the system fixed-width font when no preference is saved. |
| Text > Text preview font size: | 6 to 96 points, with one decimal place. With no saved preference, the size comes from that default font. |
| Multimedia > Play automatically | Disabled by default. Starts media playback after preparation and animated images after loading. |
| Multimedia > Media cache size: | 1 to 1,048,576 MiB; default 16 MiB. Maximum media data cached per preview. The media can be larger. The total memory used for playback can exceed this limit. |
Click OK. The font and size apply immediately to the displayed text preview. To apply other settings to an open preview, select another file, then return to the original file.
Parallel requests remain subject to global execution limits. Preview availability also depends on the format and decoder; see previews.

Cancel closes Options without applying your changes. OK applies and saves them. If Unable to save options appears, the new values are active for the session, but may not persist; correct the reported problem and save again. S3Client also remembers pane layouts, view modes, columns, and settings in some dialogs.
